The Bergeron Story

Bergeron... A True Pioneer
Ronald M. Bergeron, Sr., founder of the Bergeron Land Development and the Bergeron Family of Companies, began his career clearing 5 acres of land with only a machete, an axe, a rope and an old Mercury truck for $235.  With this he invested in a 1943 Ford Ferguson tractor to help farmers plant orange groves and clear tracts for pasture land for cattle.  When the orange and cattle industry began to decline, Mr. Bergeron traded his tractor for a bulldozer.  He worked with mixed emotions as he leveled some of the very groves he helped plant to make way for the housing explosion.  As the housing market grew, he moved into the quarry business providing raw rock material needed for buildings and state highways.  In 1965 Mr. Bergeron incorporated his first business, Bergeron Land Development, Inc. (BLD), and turned it into one of the most successful and largest site development and roadway contractors in the State of Florida.  Bergeron Land Development, Inc. has been named among Florida’s Top 100 Contractors in Southeast Construction Magazine for the last several years.  In the mid-1980’s Bergeron was integral in the successful completion of two of the largest interchange projects (at that time) in the State of Florida, the I-95/I-595/SR84, a $120 M project and the I-75/ I-595 / Sawgrass, an $80 M project, for the Florida Department of Transportation.

Since 1965 Bergeron has performed projects in the public and private sectors throughout Florida. The projects in the private sector include site preparation services for residential subdivisions, buildings, industrial and other facilities. In the public sector, Bergeron constructs roads highways, airports, canals, levees, and wetland mitigation.

In 1968 Ron began to flourish and developments to expand, and then in 1989, Ron developed a real estate holding company, Bergeron Properties and Investments Corporation.  Bergeron Properties manages more than thirty-five companies of which Mr. Bergeron is either CEO or President for real estate throughout Florida, Georgia and Michigan.

As a certified contractor, Mr. Bergeron qualifies all thirty-five of his companies.  He possesses a Certificate of Competency and a State of Florida Underground Utility & Excavation Contractors License.

Over the years, Mr. Bergeron’s sons, Ronald M. Bergeron, Jr. and Lonnie N. Bergeron joined the company and continued the tradition started by their Father to enhance the projects and scope of the business.  Bergeron provides its services to the private sector as well as to governmental agencies.  Major ventures have included the site preparation for various Arvida Developments and highway construction projects.  BLD provided site preparation for the Sawgrass Interchange connecting the Sawgrass Expressway and I-75; and developed the sprawling interchange of I-595, I-95, State Road 84 and the Fort Lauderdale International Airport, the largest state road project ever undertaken in Florida, at a cost of $120 million.

In the early 90’s Bergeron expanded to include jobs north of Palm Beach County into the Sebring and the Orlando area. Some projects included a portion of the Central Florida Greeneway, Orange Blossom Trail and major roadway improvements at the Orlando International Airport.

In 1997, BLD was selected by the South Florida Water Management District to assist in the multi-billion dollar Everglades Construction Project which aims to redirect water now discharged to the tide along its traditional path and remove phosphorous by directing the flow through six storm water treatment areas.  Bergeron Land Development, Inc. completed the restoration project Stormwater Treatment Area 2 and WC 2A Hydropattern Restoration Works for South Florida Water Management District, which was awarded a world wide award for best design, quality, importance and completion.

Mr. Bergeron’s concern for preservation is overwhelming.  In August 2007, Mr. Bergeron was appointed by Gov. Charlie Crist to a five-year term on the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. He is actively involved on an Everglades Restoration Team whose main objective is to establish and maintain communication between relevant government bodies and to exchange information and coordinate preservation efforts.  His concern is to help prevent permanent damage to wildlife and the ecology in the Everglades being caused by control of the water table and pollution in general.

With its many resources and creative management, the Bergeron Family of Companies continues to be a major force in the real estate, land development and building industries going into the 21st Century!
